2008/9 IFF Ranking system
The IFF Ranking system has been in operation since 2002 and has served the purpose of increasing participation
at domestic opens.
The fundamental principles of the ranking system are:
- All fencers who enter a tournament will receive ranking points
- Almost all Irish tournaments, along with the Northern Irish Open, attract points
- A fencer's best 6 results go towards the total ranking for the year
- The ranking is calculated on a rolling basis
- Tournaments are weighted in two tiers: Senior (which attract full points) and Intermediate/Junior
(which are weighted at 2/3)
In 2008/9 the ranking scheme will undergo the following changes effective 1-Sept-08:
- The number of tiers will move from two to three. These are to be classified A, B or C
- Two foreign tournaments have been nominated to join the scheme
- The Derry Open, the second major NI tournament, will join the scheme

Purpose of Change
- To build the Irish Open and Northern Ireland Open as flagship events
- To improve the level of fencing in Ireland by aiding the transition between domestic and foreign events
- To give the selectors more information with which to decide on team choice, and make those choices more transparent.
In normal circumstances, the top 2 fencers in each weapon will receive automatic selection to the 5 Nations.
