FIE Competitions (including Satellites)
New Procedure for Entry
The rules of FIE competitions (including satellites) state that if there are 5 or more competitors from the same country, they must
either bring a referee with them or pay a fine of 500 Euro (recently increased from 250 Euro).
The Irish Fencing Federation is not in a position to fund this cost. Therefore, the cost must be borne by the fencers. It seems that
it may be cheaper for the fencers to bear the cost of an actual referee's travel expenses, accommodation and food.
In order to administer this change, we need to introduce a tighter system of putting in entries. We have always requested fencers to
send in to the IFF their proposed programme of competitions at the start of the season, and this has worked well for those fencers who
have done so. However, there have been some fencers who have asked at the last minute just before the closing date for entries to be
entered for competitions. If this were to continue, it could have the effect of increasing the number of participants from 4 to 5 just
one week before the competition, i.e. too late to make arrangements for referee, with the effect of incurring the 500 Euro fine.
Therefore, with immediate effect, all fencers who plan to attend FIE (including satellite) competitions this season should submit their
proposed competition programme to the IFF Secretary () no later than 6 weeks before their first planned competition. This will allow a decision to be made, if there are
5 or more, as to whether it would be cheaper to take a referee or pay the fine.
