New Medical Officer

Last November the Federation appointed a Medical Officer, Dr. Pauline Fleming. This was done to keep us in line with the Sports Council and to deal with any medical problems that may occur. Pauline Fleming is very well suited for the job as in her College days she fenced for Trinity College. She attended on one of the days of the National Championships and has met with the Committee of the Federation. She will instruct the committee members on safety procedures for competitions in the near future, and will also speak with fencers about nutrition and other medical matters at forthcoming Panel Training session. In order to implement the recommendations of the Government Task Force on Sudden Cardiac Death, we will be issuing a questionnaire to be completed at the same time as IFF licence application. These questionnaires should be returned direct to our Medical Officer .

International Fencers:

Owen McNamee, our first ever Mens Sabre participant, took part in the European Championships in Izmir, Turkey, in July and I wish him every success in his bid to become a carded athlete by going to Paris to fence for the year. Andrew Fenwick took part in FIE training camp in Korea, prior to participation in the Junior World Championships.
Nuala McGarrity, as a member of the Executive of the European Fencing Confederation, worked on the Directoire Technique of the European Championships in Izmir.
I take this opportunity to wish all our fencers every success in the coming season and I wish Siobhan Byrne all the best at the forthcoming World Championships in Turin. Due to injury, Siobhan was unable to participate at the European Championships, but is fully fit again. We also hope that Conor Nagle will have as successful a season as last year and will also try to get carded again.
We were invited to send 3 fencers to an Epee Training Camp in Prague for one week run by the Foundation for the Future of Fencing. Andrew Fenwick, Keith Halloran and Conor Nagle participated and we await news of how they got on at the competition which finished the week.

Coaches:

We were invited to send a Coach to a Coaching Seminar in Moscow during the year and Fionbarr Farrell took part. Fionbarr found the seminar very helpful and is willing to pass on to other coaches the benefit of his experience.

We welcome to these shores Tristan Parris, British Coach, who has come to live in Galway and will be coaching in UCG and hopefully some schools and perhaps a new club in the West of Ireland; we also welcome Olga Velma epeeist from Estonia who has come to live here in the last six months in Carrick-on-Suir who hopes to set up a club there and eventually set up fencing in schools in the same area.

Referees:

During the last year Tony Quinn passed his Foil FIE Refereeing Examination, and is now qualified at all weapons. He has been invited to referee at the forthcoming Commonwealth Championships in Belfast.

Annual General Meeting:

Our AGM takes place on 22nd October at which our Calendar will be finalised. Please can clubs finalise the dates and competitions which they wish to run and come to the AGM in a position to finalise the calendar.

Rankings:

Our good wishes go with Paul Bouchier-Hayes who has recently departed to work in Australia for six months and thence to the U.S. The grateful thanks of all fencers are due to Paul for his work on the rankings. At Paul's request, in order to make this work easier, all competition organisers are requested to use the Engarde system and to enter each fencer's name and licence number on the competition records which should be emailed to Paul immediately after competitions.

New Club:

Congratulations to Marcos Simpson who is setting up a new club in Dundalk Institute of Technology.

Website:

Our website is in the course of being updated - thanks again to Des and Deirdre. Part of this update is a list of all licensed fencers.

We are running a Federation Awards dinner on 14th October in the Mont Clare Hotel and hope you will all attend as we expect a really good night. If you need any further information contact Sarah Drumm - Tickets are 50 Euro (adults) 35 Euro (students)….Ticket information
